Volunteer

Our volunteers are the heart of our mission. Their dedication, skills, and compassion enable us to provide critical healthcare services, education, and advocacy for refugee and underserved women. By volunteering with us, you will play a vital role in transforming the lives of women who face significant challenges in accessing reproductive health services.

We are particularly looking for volunteers who can speak Farsi, Dari, or Pashto. Many of the women we serve come from regions where these languages are spoken, including Afghanistan and parts of Iran. By offering language-specific support, you can help bridge cultural and communication gaps, ensuring that these women receive the care and information they need in a language they understand.

Refugee women often face barriers to healthcare because of language differences. Many healthcare systems in the US and Canada do not provide adequate translation services, leaving women feeling isolated and misunderstood. Volunteers who speak Farsi, Dari, or Pashto help:

  • Facilitate clear communication between healthcare providers and refugee women, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Create a sense of trust and comfort for women who may feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar environments and languages.
  • Translate educational materials on reproductive health, pregnancy, contraception, and menstrual hygiene so that women can make informed decisions about their health.
  • Offer emotional support to women who are navigating complex healthcare systems, often after experiencing trauma or displacement.

Whether you have medical expertise, advocacy experience, or simply a passion for helping others, there are many ways you can contribute. Here are some of the roles where volunteers who speak Farsi, Dari, or Pashto can make a meaningful impact:

As a healthcare support volunteer, you will help facilitate communication between refugee women and healthcare providers. This role includes:

  • Interpreting during medical appointments, ensuring that patients understand their diagnoses, treatment options, and follow-up care instructions.
  • Accompanying women to clinics and hospitals to offer language support during prenatal visits, gynecological exams, or other medical consultations.
  • Helping with medical documentation by translating health histories, prescriptions, and medical records as needed.

You don’t need to have a medical background to volunteer in this role, though any experience in healthcare is an asset. What matters most is your ability to communicate fluently and compassionately with women in their native languages.

Our reproductive health workshops provide essential information on topics like family planning, contraception, pregnancy, and menstrual hygiene. As a workshop facilitator, you will:

  • Lead or co-lead educational sessions for refugee women, using your language skills to ensure that the information is accessible and culturally sensitive.
  • Answer questions and provide one-on-one support after workshops, clarifying any concerns women may have about their reproductive health.
  • Help translate and develop educational materials, including pamphlets, videos, and handouts, to ensure they are relevant to the Farsi-, Dari-, and Pashto-speaking communities.

This role is perfect for individuals passionate about women’s health and education who want to make a direct impact on the lives of refugee women.

If you’re passionate about policy and community outreach, this role is for you. As an advocacy volunteer, you’ll:

  • Work with local organizations and policymakers to improve healthcare access for refugee women who speak Farsi, Dari, or Pashto.
  • Help connect refugee women to local services, clinics, and resources by reaching out to community centers, mosques, and refugee support groups.
  • Raise awareness about the specific reproductive health needs of refugee women by organizing events, distributing educational materials, and collaborating with local media.

Your ability to speak the languages of the communities we serve will enable you to build relationships and foster trust, helping us amplify our impact.

Volunteering with Women’s Health Without Borders offers you the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of refugee women. You will:

  • Empower women by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to take control of their reproductive health.
  • Create meaningful connections with women who have faced unimaginable challenges, helping them navigate their healthcare journeys with dignity.
  • Gain experience in a multicultural, multilingual environment, honing your communication and leadership skills in the process.
  • Be part of a global movement to reduce healthcare disparities and ensure that every woman—no matter where she comes from—has access to the care she deserves.
